Veteran entertainer and activist; Charly Boy has expressed his indifference to the recent renaming of a bus stop in Lagos State from “Charly Boy Bus Stop” to “Badoo Bus Stop” after rapper Olamide.
The bus stop, located in the Bariga Local Council Development Area, was renamed by the outgoing council chairman, Kolade Alabi.
Charly Boy’s Reaction
Charly Boy described the renaming as “silly” and “petty,” questioning the motive behind the change. He emphasized that recognition should go to anyone who has contributed meaningfully to the community, stating, “It doesn’t matter to me. Anyone who has done something meaningful for their community can take the shine”.
The Charly Boy Bus Stop was named after the entertainer due to his long-standing relationship with the Gbagada area and his contributions to the community, including providing scholarships to young people. Charly Boy believes the renaming is a calculated attempt to erase his decades of activism and social defiance.
Public Reaction
The renaming has sparked mixed reactions among residents and social media users, with some questioning the motives behind the move. Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore condemned the renaming, describing it as “vindictive, haphazard, and laced with ethnic undertones”.
Femi Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria, also criticized the move, calling it unconstitutional and carried out without public consultation.
