A Grade ‘A’ Customary Court located in Mapo, Ibadan, has directed that two brothers, Usman, aged 20, and Toheeb Wasiu, aged 26, be held in a correctional facility for allegedly insulting a police officer.
They entered a plea of not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and breach of peace brought against them.
The court’s President, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, granted each defendant bail in the amount of N200,000, requiring two dependable sureties for the same amount.
Akintayo stipulated that the sureties must provide proof of three years’ tax payments to the Oyo State government and each possess a valid identity card.
She postponed the case until July 2 for a hearing.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ayodele Ayeni, had told the court that the defendants committed the offense on May 13, at approximately 12:30 am, at the entrance of Mapo police station, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Providing further details on the incident, Ayeni stated that the Wasiu brothers cursed and directed abusive words at Insp Taiwo Ige and two other officers.
According to the prosecutor, the siblings used these abusive remarks to provoke the public against the police, thereby causing a breach of peace.
He noted that the offense violated sections 516 and 249 of the Criminal Code Cap. 38 vol. ii Law of Oyo State 2000.
