Turkey has experienced another deep earthquake this month as the country struggles to recover from earlier catastrophes.
The 5.5 magnitude quake struck central Turkey just a few days after two additional earthquakes struck the border region near Syria.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre issued an alert of a 10 km deep earthquake at 10:27 am.
A 10 km deep earthquake was reported to have struck 18 km northeast of Emirgazi and 40 km south of the city of Aksaray.
Also, according to India Today, the catastrophe occurred in the Nide province, which is nearly 230 miles from Gaziantep – affected by the initial 7.8 earthquakes on February 6.
The Golbasi district was also spotted with collapsed structures and mounds of debris, compounding the damage done to Turkey’s infrastructure.
The catastrophe of today occurs just as Turkey and Syria are starting to work on rebuilding houses for the millions of people who were displaced by the earthquakes.
No casualties have been recorded as a direct result of today’s tragedy, but more than 50,000 people have died as a result of the ongoing catastrophe.
In the wake of the incident, vice president Fuat Oktay tweeted that teams are “in the field” evaluating the damage but “there is no negative situation at the moment.”
He said: “Get well soon to all our citizens who were affected by the earthquake in the Bor district of Niğde.
“Our teams are in the field, the damage assessment work continues. There is no negative situation at the moment. May Allah protect our country and our nation from all kinds of disasters.”
An earthquake with a fresh magnitude of 6.4 rocked Turkey and Syria on Monday, destroying areas that had been devastated by a much larger earthquake two weeks earlier.
After other structures fell, trapping residents, and several people were hurt in both countries, officials acknowledged that three people perished in Monday’s tremor.
This occurred precisely two weeks after the devastating 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that occurred on February 6.
Turkey has reportedly seen 9,000 aftershocks since the catastrophic earthquake.
