Tragedy struck in Pakistan as a devastating fire swept through one of Karachi’s largest shopping malls, claiming the lives of at least 21 individuals. Hassan Khan, spokesman for the Rescue 1122 Sindh emergency service, confirmed the grim news, stating, “In total, 21 bodies have been recovered,” and assured the public that the search efforts would persist. Among the deceased was a heroic 25-year-old rescuer who bravely entered the flames, showcasing the bravery of those trying to help.
Standing outside the charred remains of the mall, Shehbaz Ghulam desperately awaited news of his missing nephew. “We have made requests to the authorities,” he implored. “We also request the media to help us in any way possible. No matter what condition he is in, if he is found and returned to us, we will find some peace.”
The anguish in the air was palpable as Karachi’s top police officer, Syed Asad Raza, revealed they had a list of 60 individuals reported missing. Despite the chaotic scene, rescuers managed to bring the blaze under control, offering a glimmer of hope amid the tragedy.
As families anxiously waited for any sign of their loved ones, Muhammad Qaisar shared his heart-wrenching experience. The last time he heard from his wife, sister, and daughter-in-law was around 8:00 pm Saturday. “The phone kept ringing until 10:00 pm, but no one answered. It continued to ring until midnight,” he said, his voice filled with despair.
The three-storey Gul Plaza, a vibrant hub housing over 1,200 shops known for wedding shopping and home decor, has now turned into a site of mourning. Frustration grew among shopkeepers and families, who criticized authorities for the slow pace of rescue efforts, begging for more action and compassion in the face of such a devastating crisis.
A government committee has been formed to investigate the cause of the fire, as the community grapples with the loss and rallies for answers.
