Former Cincinnati Bengals running back Rudi Johnson has passed away at the age of 45. According to TMZ Sports, Johnson died in Florida shortly after midnight on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. A family source confirmed his passing earlier this week, noting that the official cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

The source informed TMZ Sports that Johnson had recently been grappling with mental health issues and the potential effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which he was ultimately unable to surmount. Despite these challenges, Johnson remained devoted to supporting others both on and off the field, a commitment that stayed at the core of his life until his death.

Born in Petersburg, Virginia, on October 1, 1979, Johnson entered the NFL in 2001 after being drafted in the fourth round by the Cincinnati Bengals. His initial two seasons involved limited playing time, but he rose to prominence as a starting running back in his third season at age 24, accumulating 957 yards and nine touchdowns.

Over the next three seasons, Johnson established himself as one of the league’s most dependable running backs, compiling over 4,000 rushing yards and scoring 36 touchdowns.
