Gigi Hadid has been arrested in the Cayman Islands for possessing marijuana.
Following her arrest for marijuana possession in the Cayman Islands, Gigi Hadid was fined $1,000 Cayman Island dollars (€1,066).
On July 10th, the model, 28, who hosted the Netflix competition series Next In Fashion, was detained alongside her friend Leah McCarthy.
The two were detained for “importing marijuana and utensils used for consuming marijuana,” according to Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control.
When Hadid and McCarthy came from the US on a private flight, their luggage was inspected, and some marijuana was found.
They appeared in the Cayman Islands summary court on July 12th and were charged with the importation of a controlled drug and the importation of a drug utensil, to which they entered guilty pleas.
They were charged 1,000 Cayman Islands dollars and no conviction was recorded, authorities said.
A representative for Hadid said she was “enjoying” the Cayman Islands despite the arrest, and that the cannabis had been purchased legally in New York “with a medical license”.
The model also shared pictures on her Instagram on Tuesday of her holiday which showed her on the beach with friends, writing: “All’s well that ends well.”
In a statement shared with the PA news agency, Hadid’s representative said: “Gigi was traveling with marijuana purchased legally in NYC (New York City) with a medical license.
“It has also been legal for medical use in Grand Cayman since 2017. Her record remains clear and she enjoyed the rest of her time on the island.”
After being discovered by Paul Marciano, a fashion designer of Moroccan descent and the co-founder of Guess, Hadid started her modeling career at the age of two.
She later went on to work with companies like Versace, Chanel, Fendi, and Marc Jacobs and appeared on more than 30 covers of several foreign Vogue publications.
Zayn Malik, a former member of One Direction, and Hadid have a daughter together.
