House Of Reps Launches Probe Into Nigeria Police Over ₦50bn Fraud, Illegal Sale of Police Barracks

The House of Reps has launched a probe into the NPF over alleged ₦50bn contract fraud, diverted funds, illegal barracks sales.

The House of Representatives has launched a sweeping investigation into the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over damning allegations of corruption, procurement fraud, and illegal sale of national assets.

At Thursday’s plenary, lawmakers adopted a motion of urgent public importance led by Rep. Ibe Osunwa, mandating the Committees on Public Assets and Procurement to probe alleged contract inflation, abuse of office, and diversion of public funds.

The motion highlights reports that the NPF bypassed procurement laws to award contracts of over 50 billion Naira to unqualified firms. It is alleged that many of them failed to deliver arms, gunboats, and forensic tools—posing a grave threat to national security.

Notably, the Police allegedly split a ₦6 billion uniform contract into 66 smaller deals to evade procurement regulations without proper oversight. Lawmakers also decried the reported illegal sale of prime police barracks in Abuja, Lagos, and Kano to politically connected private entities without statutory approvals.
