Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, talked candidly about her Nigerian roots on Saturday, calling the African nation “my country.”
Meghan, who arrived in the nation on Friday with Prince Harry, thanked Nigerians for extending a warm welcome to her and Harry in “my country,” revealing that a recent DNA test had indicated that she is “43 per cent Nigerian.”
It was learned that Meghan gave a speech at a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) event held by women in leadership and co-hosted by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the head of the World Trade Organization.
Duchess arrived at the summit almost an hour late, told the audience: “I want to start by saying thank you very much for just how gracious you’ve all been in welcoming my husband and I to this country … my country.”
She revealed that she discovered her Nigerian heritage via a genealogy test, saying the first thing she did after the result was “call my mum, because I wanted to know if she had any awareness of it.”
She noted that her visit to the country has given her a better understanding of being a Nigerian
She said, “Never in a million years would I understand it as much as I do now. And what has been echoed so much in the past day is, ‘Oh, we are not so surprised when we found out you are Nigerian”.
