It Would Have Been Colossal Failure not to declare state of emergency in Rivers — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has terminated the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, stating that his prior intervention was essential to avert what he termed a “colossal failure” of leadership.

The emergency rule, enacted on March 18, 2025, was prompted by a political impasse between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly, which had crippled governance and triggered widespread vandalism of vital state infrastructure.

Tinubu explained that the dysfunction in both the executive and legislative branches necessitated the emergency declaration under Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution. “It would have been a colossal failure on my part as President not to have made that proclamation,” he said, emphasizing that the action prevented Rivers from descending into chaos.

During the emergency period, the governor, deputy governor Ngozi Nma Odu, the Speaker Martins Amaewhule, and all lawmakers were suspended for six months. Tinubu described this measure as a constitutional mechanism to restore peace and stability.

He expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for swiftly approving the emergency rule and acknowledged the support of traditional rulers and Rivers residents. While some contested the proclamation in court, the President noted that such actions demonstrated the robustness of Nigeria’s democracy, though he maintained the measure was critical to preserving order.

Tinubu revealed that intelligence reports now indicate a “new spirit of understanding” among political stakeholders in the state. He confirmed that Fubara, Odu, Amaewhule, and all lawmakers would return to their roles on September 18, 2025.

The President called on political leaders across Nigeria to prioritize peace, collaboration, and harmony to deliver the benefits of democracy.

“Let this realisation drive your actions at all times,” he said.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
