In recent updates, the White House has disclosed that the US President, Joe Biden nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court on Friday.
If the Senate confirms Jackson’s nomination, she will become the first black woman to serve on the country’s Supreme court. She currently serves on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
If approved, Jackson will be the first black female judge in the Supreme Court’s 232-year history.
The nomination came less than a month after Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, a long-serving liberal, announced his planned retirement this summer after nearly three decades on the bench.
During Breyer’s 1999-2000 term, Jackson clerked for him.
Biden “conducted a rigorous process” to find Breyer’s replacement, the White House said in a statement, and “sought an individual who is committed to equal justice under the law and who understands the profound impact that the Supreme Court’s decisions have on the lives of the American people.’’
The statement added, “Judge Jackson is an exceptionally qualified nominee as well as a historic nominee.”
“The Senate should move forward with a fair and timely hearing and confirmation.’’
On Friday afternoon, Biden will make remarks at the White House to announce his nomination.
