A guy lit himself on fire in a park immediately across from the Manhattan courthouse where former US President Donald Trump was being prosecuted on Friday, creating a horrific scene.
The startling event happened right after the jury selection process for Trump’s cover-up trial involving hush money was finished.
The man was spotted handing out flyers and dousing himself with an undisclosed substance before setting himself on fire, according to eyewitnesses and accounts from the scene.
He lit the liquid on fire, which caused his clothes to catch fire, and the situation quickly became more explosive. Social media users have been sharing videos of the terrifying moments the man was consumed by flames and then fell to the ground.
Rushing to his rescue, police officers and plainclothesmen tried putting out the fire with fire extinguishers and their clothing.
Dave, a 73-year-old witness, described the sequence to AFP, noting the sudden and alarming nature of the act. “He was throwing pamphlets before he poured the liquid on himself and lit the fire,” Dave recounted.
Authorities quickly sealed down the area as soon as multiple ambulances and other emergency services arrived at 100 Centre Street.
The remaining pieces of the man’s burning garments were strewn all around the park, and a journalist observed that there was a strong scent of burning chemicals in the air.
The high-profile trial’s proceedings were delayed as a result of the event, and the court didn’t resume at 3 PM as planned.
Although the man’s self-immolation was confirmed, the New York Police Department has not yet explained his extreme behavior.
“A man did set himself ablaze outside the Supreme Court building. An NYPD spokeswoman said, “We’re still gathering details from the field.”
