Parenting is more than just raising a child—it’s about shaping their future. It involves nurturing, guiding, and preparing them to become confident, responsible, and emotionally balanced individuals.

As we’ve explored in previous articles, our parenting styles are often shaped by how we were raised. Some of the parenting methods we adopt from generations instill strong morals and discipline, while others may hinder a child’s growth or emotional well-being.
The good news is that we have the power to redefine our approach and create a nurturing environment rooted in love, respect, and understanding.
Breaking the Cycle: Establish New Parenting Values
A) Be Truthful to yourself
To break free from these harmful parenting patterns, we must first be honest with ourselves and answer this fundamental question truthfully: “What kind of mother do I want to be?
Then, take a moment to reflect on the parenting values you want to uphold. Ask yourself:
1) Do I want my child to fear me or trust me?
Note: Fear-based parenting may produce obedience, but it often creates anxiety and emotional distance. Trust builds confidence and strengthens relationships.
2) Am I raising a child who follows orders or one who thinks critically?
Note: Teaching children to question, analyze, and make sound decisions prepares them for adulthood.
3) How do I handle mistakes—do I punish, or do I teach?
Note: Instead of instilling fear through punishment, focus on discipline that teaches responsibility and growth.
After answering these questions, define your core parenting values—whether they are kindness, respect, resilience, integrity, or emotional well-being. Then, create a parenting approach that aligns with these values rather than repeating old patterns. We shall continue in the next article.
By being intentional in our parenting, we can raise emotionally secure, independent, and well-rounded individuals who thrive in all aspects of life.
