MOTHERHOOD: PARENTING STYLES AND THEIR IMPACTS ON THE CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT – PART 3

Welcome to Episode 3 of Parenting Styles, Awesome Mothers. I am confident that we are doing well. God gave us inner strength, which has helped us balance our work and responsibilities as wives and mothers. So, we are unique!

You may recall that we discussed last week, how our parenting styles reflect our attitudes, responsibilities to our children, and expectations from them. We also talked about the Authoritative Parenting Style; mothers who adopt this parenting style are disciplined, firm but warm, and loving.   The children of such mothers are always happy, independent, and less violent.

Our parenting style is critical because it influences everything about the child, including how the child interacts with others, handles problems, and feels about himself or herself; this has a long-term impact on the child. As a result, we must adopt parenting styles that promote our children’s healthy growth and development.

Authoritarian parenting is a parenting style in which children are held to high standards. It is distinguished by strict rules with no warmth, rules that children are expected to follow. Children are punished rather than disciplined for their misbehavior.
To control their children’s behavior, authoritarian parents use the threat of consequences style. This can be effective in the short term but has serious long-term consequences.

Mothers who use this parenting style;
1) Are disciplined, and strict, but not sensitive to their children
2) Expects their children to obey them blindly
3) Are Cold and non-nurturing
4) Expects their children to accept their values and judgment at all times
5) Adopt harsh punishment to instill discipline
6) Do not listen to their children’s opinions

Children raised by authoritarian mothers;
1) Are not Independent
2) Have low self-esteem.
3) Find it difficult to tolerate others
4) Are often unhappy
5) Tend to have anti-social behavior patterns such as; aggression, anger, rebellion, etc.
6) Are goal-driven

Which Parenting style are you adopting? Is it beneficial to your child’s healthy growth and development? Keep an eye out for my next article, in which I will discuss the third parenting style.

Please share your experience!
Bye for now
