Motherhood: Understanding And Addressing Disrespectful Behavior in Teenagers 11

Hello Great Mothers!

The teenage years can be challenging for both parents and teens. As parents, we expect our children to respect us, and obey the house rules. We expect them to be polite and take all our instructions. But as they grow into adolescence, some of them begin to display different rude behaviors.

These behaviors may come in different forms, it may be a form of pretense that he or she did not hear when you call. Your teen may disregard your rules, he or she may slam the door, walk out on you, or talk back at you. It may even be in the form of physical aggression.

Whichever form it comes, you must address your teen’s disrespectful behavior before it gets worse. However, a more strategic approach is needed in handling this disrespectful behavior.

In previous articles, it has been discussed extensively the causes of teen’s disrespectful behavior, we shall continue with how we can handle these attitudes to achieve desired results.

Ensure open and honest communication

To achieve the desired results, a free atmosphere must be created for your teen to express his or her feelings without fear of judgment.

You must focus your attention on solving the problem and must involve your teen in the decision-making process. During the conversation, maintain eye contact, avoid interrupting, and be honest, but be gentle in sharing your thoughts and emotions.

Also, give a listening ear to your teen. At the end of the discussion, the issue should be resolved, and rules and the consequences of breaking the rules should be agreed upon by both you and your teen.

God notices your dedication to caring for your home; He will bless you accordingly. So, be joyful, for a happy mother nurtures a happy home.
