New York Attorney General Who Investigated Trump For Fraud Subpoenaed By DOJ

Published on

New York Attorney General Letitia James has been served a subpoena as part of a federal grand jury investigation into her office’s $454 million civil fraud judgment against former President Donald Trump, according to an individual familiar with the matter.

The subpoenas were issued by the Albany U.S. Attorney’s Office following the FBI’s initiation of a probe into potential misconduct during the prominent case, which was finalized earlier this year.

One subpoena reportedly requests details regarding James’ management of the Trump civil fraud trial, which focused on claims that the former president and his company overstated asset values to obtain favorable loans and insurance terms. That case led to one of the most significant civil penalties ever imposed on a U.S. politician.

A second subpoena pertains to James’ distinct investigation into the National Rifle Association — a prolonged legal dispute in which she has accused the gun rights organization’s leadership of financial impropriety.

The source did not confirm whether the grand jury’s investigation encompasses recent allegations — reported by some media outlets — that James engaged in mortgage fraud on properties in Brooklyn and Virginia.

The Justice Department’s action represents an unusual case of a state attorney general facing federal scrutiny over prosecutorial conduct in a politically charged case. The Trump judgment has drawn sharp criticism from Republicans, who allege that James, a Democrat, pursued a politically driven campaign to harm the former president ahead of the 2024 election cycle.

James has steadfastly defended her conduct, asserting that no one — “not even a former president” — is above the law, and that the Trump case was grounded in substantial evidence of fraud.

The DOJ and FBI have not publicly disclosed the nature or target of the grand jury investigation.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
