Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been conferred with Honorary Citizenship of the State of Georgia, United States of America. This recognition was announced by Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, who proclaimed Kanu an “Outstanding Citizen” and Goodwill Ambassador from Georgia.
The proclamation, dated January 16, 2026, was received by Uche Ajulu-Okeke, the former Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, on behalf of Kanu. Ajulu-Okeke described Kanu as “Africa’s most famous political prisoner and global prisoner of conscience”.
Kanu, currently serving a life sentence in Sokoto prison, was convicted of treasonable offenses, which he has consistently denied. He has vowed to appeal the judgment.
