Security Operatives Rescue 21 Kidnapped Travellers In Kogi

21 victims who were abducted along Kogi State’s Ajaokuta-Itobe Road have been freed by security personnel.

A group of security professionals, including members of the Nigerian Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and neighbourhood vigilantes, saved the victims.

The victims—who included travellers, pupils, and employees of Comprehensive High School, Ajaokuta—were kidnapped on Thursday, December 28, 2023.

In a statement released on Saturday, December 30, Onogwu Mohammed, the Chief Press Secretary to State Governor Yahaya Bello, verified the news. He stated that the victims were transported to an undisclosed location amidst the deep forest surrounding the state’s Ajaokuta Local Government Area.

“Upon receiving the report of this distressing incident, Yahaya Bello, CON, the Governor of Kogi State, promptly issued directives to both security agencies and local vigilantes to embark on immediate actions that will lead to the freedom of the captives. He said the perpetrators of this reprehensible act must also be fished out,” the statement read.

“The directive underscored Governor Bello’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the citizens/residents under his charge.”

According to the CPS, the United Security Forces’ efforts generated results within 48 hours, resulting in the liberation of the 21 hostages.

“Furthermore, the operation led to the apprehension of some of the kidnappers, while those still at large are being trailed,” he added.

Bello praised the security personnel for their quick response and expressed his relief and happiness with the operation’s conclusion.

The governor underscored the significance of preserving tranquillity and safety within the state, restating the administration’s resolve to spare no effort in preserving the state’s reputation as one of the safest in the nation.

Bello praised the state’s security services and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to working together to combat criminal groups in the ongoing conflict.
