SSANU Declares 7-Day Warning Strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has embarked on a seven-day warning strike, effective Monday.

This follows the refusal of the Federal Government to meet the demands of the Association.

The part of the issues that called for the strike action are re-negotiation of the 2009 agreement – the issue of 25/35 per cent of salary increment, minimum wage areas and the issue of the N50 billion the government has promised to give as earned allowances.

Speaking with Daily Trust, Chairman, Bayero University Kano (BUK) branch of the union, Mustapha Aminu, said at an emergency Congress meeting, it was agreed that the strike should go on.

“The meeting is part of the directives from the National body that we should call an emergency meeting because we are going to embark on a seven-day warning strike starting from 18th of this month and now you can see almost everybody is in support of the strike so definitely we are not going to rest.

“By the 18th of March if the government has not said anything then we are already in the strike.

“As at this time, the government has not done anything so we are still waiting for the government to respond otherwise the only language they understand is strike and we are ready to embark.

“After the seven day warning strike, we are going into total and indefinite strike.”

He therefore warned that no union member should give room for any skeletal services in their respective departments or units.
