Authorities in Edo State have initiated a probe following the abduction and murder of a 12-year-old boy named Emiliano Egwunbare, perpetrated by his 18-year-old cousin, Tega Emajuwa.

As reported by The Nation, Emajuwa along with two associates seized the victim in Obagie Community, located in Egor local government area of Edo state, on September 16, 2025.

He resided with the parents of the deceased Emiliano for a brief period prior to executing the heinous deed. Informants revealed that Emajuwa demanded and received ransom from the parents of the late boy yet failed to free him.

The informant stated that law enforcement became involved subsequent to the ransom payment, and via diligent intelligence operations, Emajuwa was located, pursued, and apprehended.

A police insider disclosed that Emajuwa admitted to the offense one week following his detention, leading to the capture of two of his partners in crime, Edugie Destiny, who is 20 years old, and Osayande Vincent, who is 23 years old.

Their admissions guided authorities to the location where they disposed of Emiliano’s body inside a well.

Assistant Deputy Spokesperson for Edo Police, ASP Eno Ikoedem, verified the occurrence and refuted claims that the accused individuals have been freed.

She explained that the matter was first lodged at Ogida Police Division before being moved to the Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Unit in Benin for thorough and confidential inquiry.

“Following sustained tactical and technical intelligence, operatives of the unit arrested three suspects — Tega Emajuwa ‘m’ aged 18, Edugie Destiny ‘m’ aged 20 and Osayande Vincent ‘m’ aged 23 — who all made confessional statements linking them to the crime. Sadly, during the course of investigation, the victim’s body was later discovered inside a well in Obagie Community. The remains were evacuated and deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) mortuary for autopsy.

In a viral video recently circulated on social media, the mother of the deceased alleged that the suspects have been released from Police Custody.

The Edo State Police Command wishes to categorically state that this claim is false, misleading, and unfounded. The suspects remained in lawful custody until they were charged to court on 16th October 2025, where the case is currently, while they have all been remanded for prosecution. The said mother was of the deceased was present in court during the proceedings.” she said.
