Toyin Abraham Shares Why She Struggles to Speak Her Native Edo Dialect

Toyin Abraham, an actress and filmmaker from Auchi, Edo State, has explained why she is unable to speak her native Edo language.

Speaking with TikToker Jarvis at the Ginger movie’s premiere, Toyin disclosed that her fluency in Yoruba comes from marrying a Yoruba man and growing up in Yoruba territory.

“I can’t speak Edo. You know I was born and brought up in Yoruba land. And I married a Yoruba man. So I’m practically Yoruba. I can’t even speak Edo. One bit. But there’s no Yoruba I can’t speak,” she explained.

In conclusion, Toyin Abraham’s openness about her challenges with speaking her native Edo dialect highlights the broader issue of linguistic preservation and cultural identity. Despite her success and fame, she emphasizes the importance of staying connected to one’s roots and encourages others to cherish and promote their indigenous languages.

Her honesty serves as a reminder that language is a vital part of cultural heritage, and efforts should be made to preserve and pass down these dialects to future generations.
