Protests against illegal immigration in South Africa have once again stormed the country’s streets with the slogan ‘Operation Dudula.’
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered over the weekend, waving the country’s flags and screaming songs against foreigners who, they claim, have snatched their jobs.
According to the Daily Maverick, the group said that many young individuals have credentials but have turned to drugs and alcohol as they can’t find good jobs.
Foreign nationals are also blamed for the high crime rates in Hillbrow, according to Operation Dudula.
Members of the Dudula chanted anti-foreigner songs, while groups of foreign nationalities engaged in whispered conversations from a safe distance, some of which were clearly terrified.
A Zimbabwean national, Mqondisi Dube said, “It’s a very scary moment,” while speaking with Daily Maverick.
On February 12, police used tear gas, rubber bullets, and stun grenades to disperse a gathering organized by Operation Dudula.
The group had not obtained authorization for the protest, according to the police, and the group promised to return after obtaining authorization to protest a week later.
Regarding the recent murder of a Nigerian, Nicolas Omodele, several foreign nationals living in South Africa have expressed concern.
At Galeshewe in the Northern Cape, Omodele was slain in a brutal attack by a crime-fighting squad. After being assaulted over the weekend for reportedly buying a stolen laptop, he died as a result of his wounds at the Robert Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley.
The crime-fighting gang beat up Omodele and a close friend with sticks and other weapons. The cops were contacted, and Omodele was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced brain-dead before giving up the ghost.
South Africans have an ill record of deploying violence against other Africans in their country, claiming they are stealing their opportunities.
