The Abia State House of Assembly has passed the Abia State Primary and Secondary School Education Reform Bill (H.A.B. 26), a groundbreaking legislation aimed at transforming the state’s educational system. This development marks a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to providing world-class education for every child.

Key Provisions of the Bill

  • Inclusive Education Policies: Introduction of policies to cater to children with special needs, ensuring equal access to quality education.
  • Teacher Training and Retention: Robust programs to enhance teacher quality, retention, and motivation.
  • Curriculum Enhancement: Inclusion of 21st-century skills, STEM, and entrepreneurship education to equip students for the future.
  • Transparent Governance Structures: Involvement of parents, teachers, and community leaders in decision-making processes.
  • Sustainable Funding Frameworks: Consistent investment in education to ensure stability and growth.

A Step Towards a Prosperous Future

According to Hon. Anthony Chinasa, the bill’s sponsor, “This is a momentous achievement for Abia State and a clear indication of our commitment to providing world-class education for every child. We are not just improving education; we are laying the foundation for a prosperous future for our children.” The bill is expected to take effect from June 3, 2025, pending assent by Governor Dr. Alex C. Otti.

Building on Existing Initiatives

This development complements the AbiaFIRST program, launched earlier in the year, which aims to revolutionize education through innovation and reform. The program includes training for teachers, development of school infrastructure, and introduction of digital learning platforms.

The passage of the Abia State Primary and Secondary School Education Reform Bill is a significant step towards transforming the state’s educational system and empowering future generations.
