Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has inaugurated the newly elected executives of the 2026/2027 Students’ Union Government (SUG) and members of the Student Representative Council (SRC), charging them to embrace leadership as a responsibility to serve the student community.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the University Auditorium, was attended by members of the Students’ Union Government Executive Council (SUGECO), elected student representatives, staff, students, and other members of the University community.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Dick Uduma, appreciated the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for his continued efforts towards prioritising students’ welfare, as well as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, for his support towards ensuring a conducive environment for the conduct of a free and fair student election.
Professor Uduma charged the newly inaugurated SUG and SRC officials to justify the confidence reposed in them by the students, stressing the need for integrity, accountability, responsible representation and commitment to service.
He urged the student leaders to work collectively towards promoting students’ welfare and contributing to the development of the University, while using their tenure as an opportunity to cultivate responsible leadership.
In his inaugural address, the new SUG President, Comrade Victor Chinwenmeri, expressed gratitude to the students for entrusting him with the mandate to lead the Union.
He pledged to provide fair, transparent, and responsible leadership, while calling on students and elected representatives to work together, set aside their differences, and promote unity in the interest of the University community.
Following the ceremony, members of the Student Representative Council elected Hon. Nwaeze Bethel as Speaker, while Hon. Kamsi Lawrence emerged as Deputy Speaker.
The inauguration marks the commencement of the tenure of the 2026/2027 SUG and SRC leadership, with the newly inaugurated student representatives assuming responsibility for advancing the interests and welfare of the student body and contributing to the development of Abia State University.
