The Nigerian Army has confirmed that there was an attempt to gain unauthorized access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account, and it has taken immediate action to secure the platform and stop future compromises.
The Army is treating the incident, which happened on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at around 5 p.m., as a cybersecurity breach.
The Army said in a statement signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, on Saturday that technical and protective measures had been put in place to secure the account and preserve the accuracy of information disseminated to the public.
The Army is attempting to “fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control,” according to the statement.
Additionally, it cautioned the public and media to be cautious and ignore any content posted from the impacted account that was suspicious, unauthorized, deceptive, or unverified.
“Such content does not represent the official position of the Nigerian Army,” the statement said.
It listed its alternative communication channels as Facebook accounts @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo; Instagram accounts @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfo; X account @nigerianarmyinfo; and YouTube accounts @hqnigerianarmy and @nigerianarmyinfotv.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to information integrity, operational security and responsible strategic communication, while thanking the public for its vigilance and cooperation.
