Autopsy Reveals Cause Of Death Of Nigerian Boxer Who Died During Fight In Ghana

An autopsy performed on the remains of 40-year-old Nigerian boxer Segun “Success” Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday, March 29, 2025, revealed that he died of cardiac arrest.

The referee promptly called for medical assistance after the former National and West African light-heavyweight champion unexpectedly fell to the canvas in the middle of an undercard battle against Accra-born John Mbanugu, also known as “Power.”

Medical personnel rushed to the scene, but the 40-year-old boxer was declared dead despite their best efforts to resuscitate him.

Remi Aboderin, the president of the West African Boxing Union and the secretary-general of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, told reporters the autopsy’s preliminary post-mortem findings is needed.

“The preliminary post-mortem results indicate that Segun died from sudden cardiac arrest. But further investigation into his heart condition is required, and as a result, his body will not be released to Nigeria for burial until approximately two weeks,” Aboderin said

The autopsy was conducted on Wednesday, April 2 following a court order into the death of the Nigerian boxer.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
