Burna Boy Shares His Experience Of Recording His First Song At Age 13

Grammy-winning musician Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, said that he recorded his first song when he was just 13 years old.

In an interview with Ebro Darden of Apple Music, the well-known “African Giant” described how he recorded the song using a tape recorder and a radio, ingeniously incorporating beats from video game soundtracks such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, NBA Street, and Volume II.

Burna said: “The First song I ever recorded was by myself, you wouldn’t even believe this. I had a tape, a radio, and I had a tape recorder, whatever, and I would use the beat from video games and some shit.

“So I used one from NBA Street, Volume II, I think, one from Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas, it was one of the GTAs, one of the early GTAs, I guess. So the first song I recorded was with that, playing that beat and then recording and then, yeah, that’s how it went. How old was I, man? I don’t know, man. I can’t remember. Yeah, around 13.”

Now a worldwide phenomenon, the 34-year-old singer is renowned for his distinctive sound and contributions to the Afrobeats genre.

Burna Boy also discussed his previous claim that Afrobeats lacked depth in a different interview. He expressed regret for the remarks and clarified that he was not entirely aware of the term’s importance in advancing Nigerian music as a whole at the time.
