Chaos Unleashed: Tanker Explosion Destroys Oluku Market in Edo State

A tragic scene unfolded at Oluku Market in Benin City, Edo State, along the bustling Benin-Lagos Expressway, as a petroleum tanker overturned on Thursday morning, igniting a massive fire that wreaked havoc on the community. The explosion injured several individuals and reduced shops, businesses, and vehicles to ashes, leaving a grim reminder of the dangers lurking when disaster strikes.

The damage was staggering, with property losses, including vehicles and a trove of food items, estimated in the millions of naira. Eyewitnesses revealed that moments before the explosion, residents had rushed to scoop fuel from the fallen tanker, a desperate act that brought urgent safety concerns to the forefront.

Social media buzzed with videos capturing the chaos—flames engulfing shops, smoke billowing into the sky, and victims mourning their losses. Amid the destruction, frantic calls for help echoed as the blaze raged on for nearly five hours with little assistance from the fire service, leaving the community in despair.

Traders, heartbroken and helpless, watched as their livelihoods vanished in minutes. The fire spread mercilessly, consuming nearby shops and vehicles, adding to the catastrophe. The community’s frustrations grew not only from the overwhelming loss but also due to the delayed response from firefighters, raising urgent questions about emergency preparedness and the ability to safeguard lives and property during such crises.

Fuel leaks from overturned tankers pose undeniable threats of fire and explosion, especially when crowds gather to collect spilled petroleum. A single spark can set off a chain reaction, turning a chaotic moment into a tragic disaster.

This heartbreaking incident comes less than two weeks after a similar calamity in Cross River State, where a tanker carrying diesel caught fire, resulting in two fatalities and leaving others severely injured. That explosion took place near the Odukpani Local Government Secretariat, underscoring the pressing need for enhanced safety measures to prevent future tragedies.

As the smoke clears over Oluku Market, the community is left grappling with loss and uncertainty, urging for urgent action to protect against such devastating events in the future.
