The Kano State High Court in the north-western region condemned Geng Quandong, a Chinese man, to death by hanging for the murder of his lover Ummulkusum Sani Buhari, also known as Ummita on Tuesday, March 26.

Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji of the Kano State High Court, sitting on Miller Road in Bompai, convicted Quandong and sentenced him to the death penalty.

Geng had broken into the family home of 23-year-old corps member Ummita on September 16, 2022, and stabbed her to death during an argument.

Geng then fled the area but was apprehended by police and charged.

The deceased’s mother revealed that the Chinese national pushed her down when she opened the door for him after he repeatedly hammered on it.

She then raced into her daughter’s room, where Geng stabbed her to death. During cross examination in court, Geng claimed Ummita broken his heart by marrying another person despite his aspirations to settle down with her.

Geng stated that he had already spent a lot of money in preparation for their wedding. He went on to say that he got her wedding outfits worth N1.5 million, as well as additional dresses they would wear on their wedding day, ‘Asoebi’ for her friends, and N700,000 in new notes to spray on the big day.

He claimed Ummita tricked him and married another person while continuing to request money from him, and she once came to Kano to ensure they met.

He had said, “Besides huge amounts of money I used to spend on her, I used to take her out to places like Bristol Palace and Central Hotel to eat food.

“I bought her house worth N4 million, a car worth N10 million. N18 million as capital to start business, and spent N500,000 worth of bags and shoes on her new shop and N1 million worth of laces and wrappers and a house in Abuja which she started building.”

He further stated that he purchased her gold for N5 million, paid her N6 million to process her certificate at Sokoto University, and N1 million to establish a solar system in their home.

After the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the Chinese national committed the murder, the court ruled that Quandong, 47, was found guilty of culpable homicide punishable by death under Section 221 of Kano State’s Penal Code Law and convicted accordingly on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
