Conversation is More Than Just Talking

We all talk, but how many of us truly converse? Conversation is more than just exchanging information; It’s an art; it’s about connecting with others on a deeper level, building relationships, and sharing ideas.

So, what makes a good conversation?

Active Listening: It’s not just about waiting for your turn to speak. Truly listen to what the other person is saying, pay attention to their body language, and ask follow-up questions.
Ask Engaging Questions: Go beyond “How are you?” Ask open-ended questions that encourage the other person to share their thoughts and feelings. For example, instead of “Did you have a good weekend?”, try “What was the highlight of your weekend?”
Find Common Ground: Look for shared interests, experiences, or values. This can help you to connect with the other person on a deeper level.
Be Present: Put away your phone and give the other person your full attention. (This cannot be over emphasized)

Why is Good Conversation Important?
Engaging in meaningful conversations can help to reduce stress and improve your mood.
Good conversation helps to build stronger relationships with friends, family, and colleagues.
It also enhances your ability to express yourself clearly and effectively.
You’re able to listen to others and gain a better understanding of their perspectives and experiences.

Tips for Improving Your Conversation Skills:

  • Practice active listening: Make a conscious effort to truly listen to others.
  • Be curious: Ask questions and show genuine interest in the other person.
  • Be mindful of your body language: Maintain eye contact and use open and inviting body language.
