Dalai Lama Says He Plans To Reincarnate After His Death

The Dalai Lama has expressed his intention to reincarnate after his death, offering reassurance to many who have been concerned about the future of the centuries-old Tibetan Buddhist institution. This statement comes as a relief to those who feared he might be the last to hold this esteemed position.

During recent prayer celebrations leading up to his 90th birthday, the beloved spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism emphasized that the next Dalai Lama should be discovered and recognized in line with traditional Buddhist practices. He also made it clear that the process should remain free from Chinese interference, a concern deeply felt by many Tibetans striving to preserve their identity in the face of Beijing’s stringent controls.

For Tibetan Buddhists, the Dalai Lama is more than just a leader; he is seen as the living embodiment of Chenrezig, the Buddha of compassion. The implications of his succession are therefore immense, not only for the Tibetan community but also for their spiritual continuity.

China’s longstanding insistence on its control over the identification of the next Dalai Lama has created a tense atmosphere, and the Dalai Lama’s announcement may provoke strong reactions. There are apprehensions that this could lead to a situation with competing Dalai Lamas: one designated by the Chinese government and another recognized by the loyal Tibetan monastic community.

The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, became the 14th in 1940 and has lived in exile since 1959, after fleeing Tibet amid a violent crackdown. His announcement underscores a belief shared by many Tibetan Buddhists that the next Dalai Lama will be born outside of China, a sentiment rooted in hope for the preservation of their culture.

In a heartfelt recorded statement shared at a gathering of Buddhist monks in Dharamshala, he articulated his succession plan, stressing that the Gaden Phodrang Trust, which he established in 2015, will guide the search for his reincarnation. He firmly stated that no external authority should interfere with this sacred tradition.

The Dalai Lama has consistently encouraged his followers to reject any successor imposed by Beijing. The Tibetan government-in-exile, which he once led, firmly supports this position, reflecting the collective aspirations of Tibetans across the globe.

Penpa Tsering, the president of the government-in-exile, expressed the deep spirit of unity among Tibetans worldwide, who have earnestly requested that the legacy of the Dalai Lama continue for the benefit of all beings, particularly Buddhists. He acknowledged the Dalai Lama’s compassionate response to this heartfelt plea on such an important milestone birthday.

Mr. Tsering also cautioned against any Chinese intervention in this delicate process, highlighting its significance as a unique Tibetan Buddhist tradition. He spoke with conviction against the use of reincarnation as a political tool, expressing the unwavering commitment of Tibetans to uphold their spiritual lineage.

Traditionally, the search for the reincarnation begins only after the incumbent’s passing and involves a careful process led by senior monks, guided by spiritual signs and visions. This cherished tradition ensures that the next Dalai Lama is not only recognized but is also nurtured to carry on the vital responsibilities of leadership within the Tibetan Buddhist community.
