Dawn Horror on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: 4 Dead as Speeding Canter Rams Truck at Ipara Remo

Tragedy struck at dawn on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as four people were killed in a fatal crash at Straight Gate School, Ipara Remo, Ogun State.

The accident, which occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, involved a blue Mitsubishi Canter (FGE 753 XA) and an ash-coloured HOWO truck (T-695 KT).

How It Happened
According to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), preliminary investigation showed the crash was caused by speeding, wrongful overtaking and fatigue.

The Mitsubishi driver, who was reportedly travelling at high speed and fatigued, rammed into the moving truck while attempting to overtake.

“The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Sector Command, confirmed a fatal road traffic crash that occurred at about 0400hrs on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, along the Ibadan–Lagos route at Straight Gate,” said Chief Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, spokesperson for the Ogun FRSC.

FRSC Response
Odunsi said the FRSC rescue team received the report at 4:33 a.m. and arrived at the scene at 4:39 a.m. – a six-minute response time.

The injured victim was rushed to Victory Hospital, Ogere for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at *FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

The crashed vehicles have been handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division* for further investigation.

Ogun Sector Commander, *Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi*, urged motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking, especially during early-morning and night journeys.

“Drivers should take adequate rest before embarking on long-distance trips and overtake only when it is safe and permissible to do so,” he warned.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Nigeria’s busiest highway, has recorded a series of fatal crashes in recent months, with early-morning speeding and driver fatigue identified as leading causes.

This latest crash comes barely hours after motorists were trapped in a *14-hour gridlock* on the same corridor due to ongoing bridge repairs.
