The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has cautioned troops deployed in Plateau State to maintain neutrality in the fight against insecurity. This directive was given during an assessment team visit led by Air Vice Marshal M. N. Onyebashi to the Operation Safe Haven Joint Operations Area in the state.
Key Points:
- Neutrality Directive: The DHQ emphasized the importance of troops remaining impartial in their operations to restore peace and normalcy in troubled areas of Plateau State.
- Assessment Visit: The team lauded troops’ resilience and fighting spirit across the joint operations area, stressing the need for intelligence-driven operations to address security concerns.
- Security Challenges: Recent attacks in the Riyom Local Government Area resulted in 27 deaths, with Governor Caleb Mutfwang blaming security personnel for failing to apprehend perpetrators despite a checkpoint near the scene.
- Call for Improved Security: The Special Envoy to the Governor on Peace and Security, Prof Chris Kwaja, suggested deploying mobile policemen, who he believes are better equipped to tackle insecurity and restore sanity in the region.
Background:
The DHQ has consistently emphasized its commitment to neutrality and professionalism in addressing security challenges in Plateau State. In January 2024, the DHQ cautioned interest groups against creating tension while the military worked to restore peace and normalcy in the state. The military has also denied allegations of bias, stating that it remains focused on protecting lives and property.
