The electricity banding system in Lagos has become a source of frustration and hardship for many residents. Personally, I believe it is nothing more than an extortion scheme designed to manipulate consumers. I recall being on Band A, and even then, I knew exactly what I could do each week with my electricity token. But the truth is, despite purchasing tokens, many of us find it impossible to enjoy consistent power.
With the banding system, we are forced to switch off appliances, turn off lights, and limit our usage just to avoid high charges.
Sometimes, we don’t even turn on our air conditioners because we fear the high billing that comes with it. This system is more about control than providing reliable power.
I strongly support the idea that Lagos should scrap the electricity banding system altogether. Instead, let everyone be on one flat rate or a fair tariff that reflects actual consumption. The current system is ineffective—despite paying for different bands, we still struggle with erratic power supply. Even on Band A, the light is often not constant; it’s on the high side, and the tokens run out before the day ends.
What is the point of having a banding system if it doesn’t guarantee consistent power? The goal should be reliable electricity that allows us to use our appliances freely and comfortably. Residents deserve to enjoy stable power without the fear of arbitrary charges or restrictions.
It’s time for Lagos to rethink this banding system. Let’s prioritize transparency, fairness, and reliable electricity for all. We pay for power, and we deserve to enjoy it without the stress and extortion.
Let’s join hands and advocate for a system that truly serves the people. Lagos deserves better!
