Ex-INEC Chairman, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Passes On At 83

Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who served as Chairman of the then National Electoral Commission (NEC) from 1989 to 1993, has passed away.

The NEC is now known as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Nwosu was born on October 2, 1941, and passed away at a Virginia hospital.

He presided over the June 12, 1993 election, which is generally considered to be the most free and fair in Nigeria. He was selected by General Ibrahim Babangida, the country’s military dictator at the time.

Bashir Tofa of the now-defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) lost to Chief Moshood Abiola of the now-defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) in that presidential election.

The Open Ballot and Option A4 voting systems were introduced by Nwosu’s commission.

Nwosu was directed to stop making more statements on the June election even though he had already released a number of results.

May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
