Former German spy chief arrested for espionage and treason

In a stunning turn of events, Germany’s former spy chief, August Hanning, has been arrested on serious charges including espionage and treason. The German Federal Prosecutor’s Office revealed that Hanning, who led the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005 and later worked as a private consultant, is accused of leaking classified information to a foreign power.

Authorities have alleged that Hanning misused sensitive intelligence to create an analysis for another nation’s intelligence agency while maintaining contact with yet another foreign spy service. However, details about the foreign powers involved remain under wraps.

In a related crackdown, police have also apprehended Manfred D, a former BND employee and Hanning’s close aide. Prosecutors allege that Manfred D sold Hanning around 2,000 classified documents for monetary gain. This whistleblower, who served as Hanning’s bureau chief and continued with the BND until recently, faces charges of aiding and abetting treason.

Both arrests sent shockwaves through the intelligence community, particularly as local reports indicated Hanning was taken into custody at his home in Nordwalde, near Münster, while Manfred D was apprehended in Bavaria. Hanning is set to appear in court on Wednesday, with Manfred D facing legal proceedings a day earlier.

Prosecutors revealed that over the years, Manfred D exploited his role as chief of staff to gain access to highly confidential materials, which he then reportedly handed to Hanning “in exchange for remuneration.” According to prosecutors, on one notable occasion, Hanning employed classified intel to write an analysis intended for an officer from a foreign intelligence service, although it remains unclear if that analysis ultimately reached its destination.

The evidence against Hanning reportedly emerged amid an unrelated investigation into German steakhouse heiress Christina Block, who is accused of orchestrating the kidnapping of her children in a bitter custody battle. Surprisingly, authorities allege Hanning was involved in an earlier attempted kidnapping, a claim he firmly denies.

In their investigation, state criminal police stumbled upon an electronic storage device laden with sensitive information, including BND documents. This scandal is not an isolated incident; the BND has previously been embroiled in controversy. In 2023, another high-ranking intelligence officer, Carsten L, was charged with treason for allegedly sharing state secrets with Russia. He reportedly received €400,000 (approximately $450,000; £340,000) in exchange for critical information about the Ukraine conflict and the Wagner mercenary group, with his trial ongoing.

As this story unfolds, the implications for Germany’s intelligence community are profound, raising questions about loyalty, security, and the potentially far-reaching consequences of betrayal..
