Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the ex-president, has expressed that Nigeria’s reputation suffers due to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected representatives in Rivers State.
The former leader of Nigeria made these remarks while addressing attendees as the Chairman of the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium held in Abuja on Saturday, March 22.
“These actions by key actors in the executive and legislative arms of government paint the country in a negative light.”
He explained that it’s unusual for past presidents to weigh in on such matters, to avoid stirring political tensions. Nonetheless, he noted that his statement was prompted by numerous appeals from Nigerians encouraging him to address the situation unfolding in Rivers State.
He further emphasized that a nation’s image, along with the level of investments it secures, hinges on the conduct of its executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
Goodluck Jonathan criticized scenarios where a single person can influence the judiciary, pointing out that such interference undermines confidence in the judicial system.
On Tuesday, March 18, President Tinubu proclaimed a State of Emergency in Rivers State in response to the ongoing political turmoil in the region.
During a nationwide broadcast, the President revealed the suspension of Gov Fubara, his deputy Professor Ngozi Odu, and members of the state House of Assembly for a period of six months, alongside the designation of a sole administrator to oversee the state.
