Is Your Tongue In Need Of Healing?

Thursday of week 10 in Ordinary Time

2 Corinthians 3:15-4:1,3-6
Psalm 84(85):9-14
Matthew 5:20-26

In the context of the commandments, Jesus challenges individuals today to transcend the literal interpretation of each commandment and to embrace a compassionate attitude toward one another. He instructs us to forgive those who have offended or irritated us in any manner.

Labeling someone as a “fool” or “renegade” is undoubtedly derogatory and disrespectful. This is why, in the Gospel of Matthew (5:20-26), Jesus addresses how individuals express themselves about others. Such language not only diminishes and insults the individual but also constitutes an affront to God, who created all human beings in His image and likeness.

The “new commandment” that Jesus presents to us today is not an easy principle to adhere to. It necessitates a “new attitude” toward everyone within our lives. This endeavor demands increased prayer, thoughtful reflection, and ultimately, forgiveness and reconciliation. It requires individuals to lift the metaphorical “veil” that obstructs their compliance with His instructions. Additionally, it necessitates patience with oneself in diligently, yet effectively, seeking forgiveness from within and subsequently approaching those with whom one is estranged to reconcile as much as possible.

It is evident from Jesus’ own life what is expected of us. He has urged us to love one another as He has loved us. This is a lifelong commitment and presents a significant challenge. I accept that it is unlikely I will be able to love all those around me in the precise manner that Jesus did. However, I remain committed to striving towards that ideal. My ongoing challenge is to remain consistently aware of those within my life who require my forgiveness, even if they are unaware of it.

May we receive the grace to recognize the divine presence in our brothers and sisters. Amen.

I wish you a day filled with purpose and positivity.

Fr Joseph Osho
