Malawi came from behind to beat Ghana 2-1 in Rabat on Sunday, reaching the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semifinals, and securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Ghana took the lead after just seven minutes into the game, when Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah volleyed into the net.
Malawi responded five minutes later as a Temwa Chawinga shot was deflected into the Ghanaian goal to level the score.
The game remained evenly poised until the 79th minute, when Rose Kadzere broke into the area and fired past goalkeeper, Cynthia Konlan to put Malawi ahead.
Ghana applied late pressure but could not find an equaliser as Malawi held on to complete the comeback.
The result sends Malawi into Wednesday’s semifinal against Algeria in Casablanca, while hosts Morocco will face Cameroon in Rabat, with the four semifinalists earning automatic qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The losing quarterfinalists will have another opportunity to qualify through African and intercontinental playoffs.
