Mary Magdalene, The First Witness

Published on

Once tormented by demons but she was delivered by the Messiah…
after having known darkness, she choose to be in the light. Her love for her Master made her the first witness of the resurrection story.

Mary Magdalene undoubtedly was beaten down by the emotions and images of the prior day, she may well have not slept.  She returned before dawn to the tomb, compelled to complete this painful burial task they had been unable to complete the day before because of the impending Sabbath.
She saw that the immense stone blocking the tomb had been rolled away.  Surely her first thoughts were those of panic and even anger because she had witnessed the gruesome, vicious, evil and unfair treatment Jesus had suffered the day before by those who persecuted him; tormented him and put Him finally, to a shameful death in the cross in between two thieves.

They might have stolen his body as another way of inflicting injury on Him perhaps. She stooped to look in. She saw two angels in white at either side of the burial bench. She turned and
saw a man standing in the darkness, blinded by her tears, thought to be the gardener; she failed to recognize Jesus until He spoke that one simple word which encompassed all of Christ’s love: “Mary”.  No other words were necessary to impart His love for not only Mary, or His mother but for all of us, His people.    Upon hearing her name, Mary’s choked reply was simply, “Rabbi”, addressing Him not as the Man she knew, but in the redemptive role His life had always been.

Let it be known that even though the enemies range with anger, in fury and violence, nothing can stop us from witnessing to Christ. May we be a true, humble and steadfast witness to Christ. May God give us the grace to continue to live out our calling from Him which was given to us from before our birth – to give witness to the Good News of salvation to the ends of the earth.

God give you Peace
