The body of British Tech entrepreneur; Mike Lynch was recovered on Thursday from the wreck of his family yacht, which sank off the coast of Sicily earlier this week following a strong storm, according to someone with direct knowledge of the rescue efforts.
Hannah, Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, is still missing, the source claimed.
The bodies of the remaining four individuals who perished when the boat capsized were found on Wednesday inside the yacht.
A powerful storm caused the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged superyacht Bayesian, which was carrying 22 guests and crew, to vanish under the waves moments after it was anchored off the port of Porticello, close to Palermo.
The 59-year-old Mike Lynch, a well-known IT entrepreneur in the UK, had invited pals to join him on the yacht to celebrate his recent acquittal in a significant fraud trial in the United States.
The other individuals who were unable to escape from the yacht, in addition to Lynch and his daughter, were Clifford Chance attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo, as well as Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International.
Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan national who was the onboard cook, was found dead close to the wreckage hours after the accident, while fifteen people—including Lynch’s wife—managed to escape unharmed.
For the past three days, specialized rescuers have been searching within the sunken yacht’s hull; nevertheless, the fire brigade reported that the operation has been difficult because of the depth and narrowness of the areas the divers are seeking.
It made a comparison between the efforts and the larger-scale ones made for the Costa Concordia, the opulent cruise ship that capsized in January 2012 off the Italian island of Giglio, killing thirty-two people.
UNSINKABLE
Naval marine specialists are perplexed by the accident and believe that the vessel, which was constructed by Perini, an Italian luxury yacht maker, and had superior fittings and safety features, should have been able to endure the extreme weather.
Authorities have begun questioning witnesses and passengers as part of an inquiry launched by prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese.
James Cutfield, the captain, and the crew have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
According to Giovanni Costantino, CEO of Perini’s parent company, the Italian Sea Group TISGR.MI, the Bayesian is “among the safest boats in the world” and is essentially unsinkable. In talks with Italian media, he also stated that he thought the storm had been predicted and that the calamity was the result of a series of human errors.
“The reason the ship sank is due to water intrusion, which will be determined by the investigators,” Costantino stated in a late-night segment of TG1.
Costantino said that the yacht sank in 16 minutes after the wind started buffeting it and causing it to absorb water, using data from the tracking system and footage that was accessible.
According to Costantino, the Milan-listed company’s reputation has sustained “enormous damage,” as seen by a 2.5% decline in shares since the catastrophe.
