Motherhood: Help! My Child Tells Lies, How Do I Teach My Child To Be Honest? 2

Published on

Hello Great Mothers!

The notion that lying is a common behavior among children shouldn’t deter us from instilling honesty in them. As mothers, we shouldn’t use this belief as an excuse to overlook dishonest conduct when it arises.

On the contrary, rather than dismissing instances of lying or dishonesty, we should seize these moments as opportunities to impart the importance of honesty to our children.

For Toddlers and Preschoolers;
It’s crucial to realize that children in their toddler and preschool years don’t usually tell deliberate lies. It is not a conscious attempt at deception that motivates their acts. Studies reveal that kids in this age range have highly developed imaginations and frequently base their intricate tales on these creative ideas.

As such, in situations where they find themselves in which they have committed a transgression, like leaving toys strewn around their rooms, they are likely to make up a story, such as linking the mess to a monster.

Psychologists suggest that when children of this age provide such explanations, it’s not out of a desire to deceive, but rather a reflection of their wishful thinking. They may genuinely believe that the room was scattered by a monster because they wish it were so, not yet comprehending the distinction between reality and their imaginations. This lack of mature understanding contributes to their tendency to fabricate stories to explain their actions.

So how do we handle their attitude when they tell lies or act deceitfully?

It is important not to overreact or act angrily, and also, avoid calling them names. E.g. a liar, as this will give them room to act defensively, and then continue to tell lies to avoid such reactions in the future.

Instead of being angry, overreacting, and acting angrily, when your toddler tells a lie or acts deceitfully, you can tell your toddler this; I can see that you have your toys scattered all over your room.

Do not act this way again, because it is not right. You can fall over-littered toys on the floor, and injure yourself. Let us go in together and tidy things up to avoid you falling and being injured.

God notices your dedication to caring for your home; He will bless you accordingly. So, be joyful, for a happy mother nurtures a happy home.
