Motherhood: Love Your Child, Don’t Spoil Your Child (12)

Hello Great Mothers!

Oftentimes we don’t know the effects of our actions on our children. We love them and we want to do everything for them and also give them what they want. As discussed in my previous article, such actions make our children grow into self-centered adults. We have also discussed some of our actions that may spoil our kids. We will be discussing reasons why mothers feel it is right for them to do all the tasks or give their children all they want.

You want them to be happy always:

Giving your child everything he/she asks if, either it is necessary or not. This makes you an overprotective mother who does not want your child to experience any difficulties in life. This way, your child grows up, leaning on you for everything.

To avoid the stress of repetition, you get things done for your kids

Most mothers do for their kids what they are supposed to do by themselves. For example: take the plate of your 3-year-old child to the kitchen instead of teaching and allow the child to take the plate by himself/herself. Because you have told him several times to always take the plate after eating, you feel compelled to take the plate when your child does not. The logic is that your child will continue to avoid doing what he/she is supposed to do because he knows you will always do it.

You don’t want your kids to struggle

Most mothers do not want their kids to struggle. Instead of teaching and allowing John to buckle his sandals by himself, you feel he will waste time fumbling with it till he gets it. So you quickly buckle the sandals for John. Though teaching a child a new thing may seem difficult and stressful at first it helps the child’s mental health. Also, the child feels fulfilled when he can finally do it by himself without much struggle.

You feel needed
Most mothers feel their kids will always need them, even as they grow into adults. And so would go their way to do everything for them. It’s okay when our kids need our guidance in accomplishing tasks than always depending on you.
