Online Safety 101 for Parents: Protecting Children against Online Dangers
As mothers, we often feel uneasy about what our children are exposed to online. We try to monitor their activities, but let’s be honest—not every mother knows how, or even has the time to do it. Technology is here to stay, and our children can’t be cut off from it, or else they’ll be left behind. On one hand, it makes them smarter, informed, and connected. But on the other hand, it leaves us asking: Who are they chatting with? What are they watching? Are they really safe?
When we were growing up, most dangers were outside because most play was outdoors. Today, dangers have entered our homes through screens. Maybe you’ve caught your child chatting with a stranger, or you’ve seen your teen hurt after reading cruel comments online. These moments remind us that online safety isn’t optional—it’s essential.
Here’s what we must teach our children:
● Privacy is power. Never share personal details like address, school, or routines.
● Not everyone is a friend. A “kind” stranger online could be anyone, and should not be trusted. Real friends are people you truly know.
● Cyberbullying hurts. Words on a screen can wound deeply. Teach kids to speak up and to use their own words to uplift others.
Practical tips for mothers:
● Keep devices in shared spaces.
● Talk openly, without overreacting, so kids feel safe to share.
● Role-play tricky scenarios, like someone asking for a photo.
● Remind them: post what honors God, family, and themselves.
Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” In today’s world, guarding their hearts also means guiding their clicks, chats, and choices online.
Big Question: How are you helping your children stay safe online while still enjoying the benefits of technology?
