NDLEA Nabs Suspect Smuggling 1,989 Rounds of Ammunition Hidden In Sacks Of Garri
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted a major shipment of military-grade ammunition concealed inside sacks of garri along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway. The seizure happened on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, when NDLEA officers on patrol stopped a vehicle and discovered 1,989 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition hidden in fresh cassava granules.
The suspect, 35-year-old Abdullahi Hassan, was arrested at the scene and is now in custody. According to NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, both Hassan and the ammunition have been handed over to another security agency for further investigation and prosecution.
The operation was part of a wider crackdown across the country. Two days later in Zaria, Kaduna State, NDLEA officers raided the Dan Magaji area and recovered 361kg of skunk, arresting a 42-year-old man, Husaini Suleiman. The agency said the raids were based on credible intelligence.
NDLEA also foiled attempts to smuggle drugs abroad through courier companies in Lagos. On 15 May, officers uncovered 170 grams of cocaine hidden inside the walls of a carton of clothes bound for Australia. In another parcel heading to the UK, they found 200 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 1,100 tramadol capsules, and 100 ampoules of promethazine injection.
In Delta State, the agency destroyed 65,000kg of cannabis grown on 26 hectares of farmland in Ukwuani and Ughelli North LGAs. Two suspects, Ifeanyichukwu Peter, 52, and Godwin Vincent Osadera, 30, were arrested during follow-up operations supported by soldiers. Similar raids in Ogun, Taraba, and Edo states led to the seizure of over 1,500kg of cannabis and more than 105,000 opioid pills.
In Abuja, NDLEA operatives arrested a 29-year-old businessman, Ogadi Peter, for allegedly producing drug-laced cakes and cookies for parties. He was picked up at his Life Camp residence, where officers recovered 800 grams of skunk and 2.7kg of cookies infused with drugs. Babafemi said the weekly update shows the agency is intensifying efforts to cut off drug and arms supply chains nationwide.
