The passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir and former Emir of the State of Qatar, has caused the Federal Government great sadness.
According to reports, Sheikh Hamad, who led Qatar from 1995 to 2013 and is widely recognized for having spearheaded the nation’s swift modernization and transformation, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
Nigeria characterized the late leader as a visionary statesman whose influence went well beyond Qatar’s boundaries in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
According to the ministry, Sheikh Hamad’s leadership was crucial in forming contemporary Qatar and enhancing the nation’s standing internationally.
“His wisdom, dedication to progress, and commitment to international cooperation will be remembered fondly by the people of Qatar, the Gulf countries, and international partners.”
“On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extends our sincere condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, the Al Thani family, and the brotherly people of Qatar,”
The ministry further affirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with Qatar during the period of mourning and prayed for the peaceful repose of the late Father Amir.
It also prayed that Almighty God grant Sheikh Hamad eternal rest in paradise and provide his family, the leadership of Qatar, and its people with strength, comfort, and fortitude to bear the loss.
