A new law that would prohibit children under the age of sixteen from using social media is set to be introduced in Norway this year.
Tech companies will be responsible for confirming the age of users.
According to Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, the action is intended to prevent digital platforms from replacing childhood.
“We are introducing this legislation because we want a childhood where children get to be children. Play, friendships, and everyday life must not be taken over by algorithms and screens,”
“This is an important measure to safeguard children’s digital lives,”
“I expect technology companies to ensure that the age limit is respected. Children cannot be left with the responsibility for staying away from platforms they are not allowed to use,”
“That responsibility rests with the companies providing these services. They must implement effective age verification and comply with the law from day one”.
I believe that banning social media for children under 16 is a good idea, as it can help curb their exposure to unhealthy content and reduce the risk of negative influences.
This measure could promote healthier habits and ensure that young kids focus on more constructive activities, contributing to their overall well-being and development.
