Okocha Criticises Jamie Carragher’s AFCON Comments

Nigerian football icon, Jay-Jay Okocha, has also contributed his perspective to the ongoing debate involving Jamie Carragher, following criticism directed at the pundit for dismissing the significance of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Carragher has encountered criticism for diminishing the importance of the Africa Cup of Nations, asserting that it doesn’t qualify as a prominent tournament while evaluating Mohamed Salah’s prospects for securing the Ballon d’Or this year.

During a discussion on Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 2-0 triumph against Manchester City on Sunday, Carragher implied that Salah’s nationality and Egypt’s performance on the international stage might obstruct his path to winning football’s most prestigious individual honor.

“I think the problem [is] the fact he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in the major tournament as such or maybe got a great chance of winning,” Carragher said.

“I think it’s either the Champions League or the major tournament. Normally, the player who excels in that, like Vini Jr. and (Kylian) Mbappe right now, Real Madrid looking really good going for the Champions League.”

“I think it’s either the Champions League or the major tournament.

His comments promptly triggered a backlash, with ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards quickly stepping in to clarify that the AFCON is, in fact, a highly regarded competition.

“Just to say, AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are at home saying ‘they aren’t taking it seriously’. AFCON is a big tournament just so you know.”

Okocha, who achieved legendary recognition at Bolton and PSG throughout his illustrious career, has now aimed a subtle jab at Carragher.

“There are some players that will say something, but you just overlook it,” said Okocha, who scored 14 goals in 73 games for Nigeria and won AFCON in 1994.

“If you look at their career, if you look at the type of football they played… then you can understand.

“I mean you wouldn’t want your son to be like Carragher. So you can never appreciate African football (if you’re like that) – and all the talents that are coming from Africa.”

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
