Ondo Varsity Alumni Condemn Killings of Students in Host Community

The Alumni Association of Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) has strongly condemned the recent killings of its students in the host community, describing the acts as “unfortunate and unacceptable”. The association is demanding immediate attention and action from relevant authorities, including the Ondo State Government and security agencies, to curb the killings.

Recent Incidents

  • Murder of 300-level Student: A 300-level student, Emmanuel, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at a private students’ hostel in July 2024.
  • Killing of Two Students: Two 200-level students, Andrel Eloho Okah and John Friday Abba, were found dead after being missing for three weeks. Their landlord, Oladele Femi, was identified as the prime suspect.
  • Murder of Joy Adeyemi: A student was stabbed to death by her boyfriend, an indigene of the host community, in July 2025.

Reactions

  • Alumni Association: The AAUA Alumni Association has demanded concrete action from the government and security agencies to ensure student safety.
  • Students’ Union Government: The SUG has condemned the killings and issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Ondo State Government and security agencies to arrest the perpetrators.
  • NANS: The National Association of Nigerian Students has also condemned the killings and threatened to mobilize students for a protest if the “senseless killings” don’t stop.

Government Response

  • Police Investigation: The police have arrested suspects in connection with the murders and are working to ensure justice is served.
  • University Response: The university management has postponed exams and is working with stakeholders to prevent further incidents.
