One suspect arrested as NDLEA uses sniffer dog to detect ‘hard drugs’ hidden inside vehicle in Lagos

A sniffer dog deployed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has helped uncover suspected hard drugs concealed inside a vehicle during a search operation in Lagos, highlighting the growing role of the agency’s canine unit in the fight against drug trafficking.

A video circulating online shows an NDLEA operative leading a trained detection dog around a parked vehicle during what appeared to be a routine search. Moments later, the dog alerted officers to a suspicious area around the boot of the car, prompting a more thorough inspection.

The search reportedly led to the discovery of illicit substances hidden inside the vehicle and the arrest of a suspect, although the exact type and quantity of the drugs recovered have not yet been disclosed.

Details surrounding the operation remain unclear, as the NDLEA has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or identify the suspect involved.

The development has, however, drawn attention to the effectiveness of the agency’s canine unit, which has become a key component of anti-narcotics operations across the country.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended Germany for its continued support, noting that sniffer dogs had played a vital role in the seizure of more than 17.932 metric tonnes of various illicit substances since their deployment.

German Consul General Daniel Krull also praised the agency’s efforts, saying the success of NDLEA operations not only enhances security in Nigeria but also benefits Germany and the wider international community.

The canine facility was described as a major milestone in the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and Germany in combating drug trafficking and organised crime.
