Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has advised locals and the families of the kidnapped schoolchildren to abstain from holding public demonstrations in response to the ongoing kidnapping crisis, warning that doing so could make the perpetrators more determined and make rescue operations more difficult.
Speaking about the situation, the governor painted a clear picture of the state’s security situation, admitting that terrorists and bandits had moved dangerously close to civilian communities and that the state was facing a dire situation.
“I told the people our reality. Our reality is that the bandits, the terrorists, are here within our doorstep.”
“This is not the time for protest. The terrorists and the bandits are not normal people. If they had a reasonable head, they won’t be in the bush doing what they are doing. So if we’re protesting, we’re fuelling their ego.”
“The heart of the bandit is also in the hands of God. Let us pray to God that He touches their hearts while we are doing our best,”
